Kennington Primary School News 5’s Space Learning Logs
We have spent the afternoon in Year 5 celebrating our learning logs that we have spent the last half term completing on our Space topic. We have put a lot of hard work and time into creating our rocket and solar system models. Miss Clarke was very impressed! We think you will be too!

Thu, 22 Feb 2018 19:21:50 GMT in Oak Class
Today we have planted peas and tomatoes. The children will be writing instructions on how to plant seeds and learning about what plants need to grow.

Wed, 21 Feb 2018 19:13:50 GMTThe Animal Man visits Oak Class
On Monday Oak class had a few special visitors! Year 4 made some fantastic fruit sculptures using different types of fruit.

Fri, 09 Feb 2018 15:45:55 GMT 5 have had a busy week!
We have had an action packed week in Year 5! We’ve been everything from bakers to painters and investigators! As part of our Maths topic this week, we have been focusing on Measurement. We practiced weighing ingredients and scaling recipes down to make our own fairy cakes which were delicious! Some of us could give Mary Berry a run for her money!

On Wednesday, we were given an investigation focusing on different measurements of capacity. We had a 10 litre tank and lots of bottles with different capacities. We had to find as many different ways of filling the tank using the bottles we had been given. We found that there was a lot of different combinations and began to convert different measurements.

In the afternoon, we became abstract painters after looking at the work of Jackson Pollock. We used paintbrushes, straws, glue sticks and whisks to create our own abstract splatter paintings. Although we got a bit messy, we had lots of fun! Our artwork looks fantastic!

Well done for a super week Year 5!

Fri, 02 Feb 2018 17:38:02 GMT Six do Macbeth
Year Six are currently studying the Shakespearean tragedy play ‘Macbeth’. It is a very dark story of murder, betrayal, ambition, bravery, guilt, disorder, power amongst others. To try and get an insight of Macbeth’s character and what drives him, the child performed a Conscience Alley. Hamza took on the role of Macbeth and walked through an ‘alley’made by the other children who asked questions about his motives and actions. They produced some great work from the activity.

Fri, 19 Jan 2018 10:29:20 GMT building
One of the challenges in Oak Class this week is to build the tallest structure out of cubes and lolly sticks. But there can only be one cube at the base.

This is a very fiddly challenge and has been brilliant for helping develop fine motor skills. It is also very tricky, and we have been using it to help promote resilience.

Wed, 17 Jan 2018 21:46:52 GMT area
The topic in Oak class this term is ‘Animals’ and we are starting off learning all about jungle animals.

We had a very creative afternoon all working together to create our own jungle themed area. The children have had lots of fun playing in there.

Wed, 17 Jan 2018 21:39:12 GMT 5 Phases of the Moon
Year 5 have been using Oreos to learn about the different phases of the Moon!

Mon, 15 Jan 2018 15:30:30 GMT 5 Roman Numerals
Today we have been using straws to learn how to read and recognise Roman Numerals in Numeracy. We even managed to write today’s date using them!

Fri, 12 Jan 2018 16:01:40 GMT investigate the digestive system
The children had a great time investigating what happens in their digestive systems today. They recreated human waste and demonstrated how it leaves the body. Don’t worry though as they used all edible items such as mashed up bread, sweet corn and a piping bag for their investigation.

Thu, 11 Jan 2018 15:36:03 GMT trees
Oak class had to find the oldest and youngest tree on the field. We talked about counting the rings to find out how old a tree is.

As we couldn’t cut down the trees to count the rings we had to measure the circumference of the trunk as one inch is about one year.

The oldest tree on the field was 50 years old but we found an even older one on the infant playground.........65 years old!

Wed, 10 Jan 2018 15:23:40 GMT weight in Oak Class
In Oak class this week we have been looking at weight. Comparing objects and talking about the heaviest and lightest.

The children have had lots of fun exploring using the balance scales and recording what they found out.

Wed, 10 Jan 2018 21:56:11 GMT Jumper Day 2017
It was Christmas Jumper Day at Kennington on Friday15th December. You were brilliant!

Wed, 13 Dec 2017 16:04:52 GMT 6 Investigates
Year Six have been investigating how light behaves and how it affects other objects and what we see. They looked at how light can make a solid object look bent in water and how light produces different colours in big an small bubbles. Lots of great investigations going on (as well as children enjoying their learning)

Mon, 11 Dec 2017 13:37:07 GMT in school, 12 Sep 2017 16:02:03 GMTOpen Week for children starting school in Sept 2018, 12 Sep 2017 16:04:01 GMTSeating Area Official Opening May 2017
Today we had the ‘official’ opening of our new seating area. We had some special visitors to mark the event and cut the ribbon, Steve and Janine from Rock FMs Breakfast Show.

Unfortunately the weather let us down after some glorious sunshine on the previous days. We just about managed to get through before the heavens opened! The children however all enjoyed the opening and having their photos taken with our celebrity guests.

Fri, 12 May 2017 12:08:23 GMT Pit Day
On Wednesday we had our Learning Pit Day. The children spent the day in their house teams and went from class to class trying out different challenges. They used the different strategies they have learned over the course of the last term that help them when they ae faced with new challenges or problems. The children really threw themselves into the pit and had great fun trying different ways of getting out. Hopefully they will continue to use the Learning Pit model when they are faced with different challenges in an out of class.

As a school we really want the children to embrace problem solving and challenging situations and not be frightened of failure as making mistkes is all part of the learning process.

One of our favourite qutoes is from the basketball player Michael Jorden who said

"I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed."

Mon, 24 Apr 2017 12:06:04 GMT Hall 2017
The Y3 and Y4 children had the time of their lives at Borwick hall this week. 39 children and 6 members of staff visited the outdoor recidential centre near Carnforth for two action packed days. The Lileywhites were playing Ipswich Town (The team Mr Pritchard followed in the late 70s for some reason!). It was a very cold wet day and the football on display didn't make things any warmer with Preston going 1-0 down in the first half. Things got brighter when the Kennington boys took to the pitch. With some fantastic goal keeping and some excellent shots, the boys came away victorious with a 4-2 win. To round off a good day out, Preston pulled a goal back with 2 minutes to go making the score 1-1. A big thank you to Jack for inviting us over.

Mon, 30 Jan 2017 16:37:40 GMT Christmas Production 2016
The KS1 production was Lights, Camel, Action this year and was a great success. Roebuck had a lot do do in their run chase but super bowling stints from Michael, Abbas and Hussain proved too much for Roebuck and the game ended with Kennington's 54 runs being enough to see them through.

The second game was a much closer affair. Cottam were put into bat first and although Abbas' bowling was good, the Cottam opener managed to rattle up 27 runs in the first over, scoring sixes and fours for fun. Fortunately, after his retirement the bowling got a lot more aggressive with some great catches coming from Faiz and Hussain. Cottam racked up a score of 43.

Kennington's opener matched Cottams and Aaman bettered his opposite man's score with an unbeaten 30. This set the platform for the next two batters and Michael and Abbas both carried the team to victory with 59.

This means the team have played 4 and won 4 with only one game left which surely means a place in the knockout stages.

Sat, 16 May 2015 10:49:26 GMT Rugby Tournament 2015
It was a great day of rugby at Preston Grass Hoppers RUFC on Thursday as over 20 schools took part in the 2015 TAG Rugby Tournament. Kennington's team played 3 games in their league. They lost two and won one. Ther was some great running, tagging and passing from all the children. Idriss should great defence with his superb diving tags, Mia was fearless in her running and Ameraj scored some fantastic tries. The team got through to the quater final of the plate competition and came close to progressing to the next round but Cottam Primary School were a bit too strong and they were beaten 5-4. Hena and Arwah showed great determination and Ben did some of his trade mark barn storming bursts. Frankie, Harley and Hayden all put in a good effort but it wasn't quite enough to see them through. It was a great afternoon though and all the players from all the schools really enjoyed themselves. Well done everyone. Thanks to all the parents who gave lifts and their support as well.
Fri, 01 May 2015 08:03:06 GMT rates Kennington a GOOD school.
We can finally reveal our OFSTED judgement.

The governors and staff are more than pleased with being judged as a ‘Good’ school. We are also pleased about being judged as ‘Good’ in the areas of Achievement, Quality of Teaching, Leadership and Management and Behaviour and Safety.

We also believe that the Early Years judgement of ‘Requires Improvement’ is fair and it reflects our own judgement of ourselves at this current time. However, as you read the report, you will see that the inspection team recognised the work we have done in the short time since September and the changes and improvements we have already made. Continuing on this trajectory will in due course raise the standards of teaching and learning needed to ensure the very best outcomes for all the children.

I am truly excited by the potential Kennington Primary School has and I’m honoured to be leading the school in these times of change. I also know that you as parents want to see the school go from strength to strength and I’d like to thank you for all the support you have given so far. If we continue to work together them I’m positive that we will move from ‘Good’ to ‘Outstanding’ in no time at all.
Fri, 01 May 2015 08:09:00 GMT Win After Shoot Out
After a hard fought 1 -1 draw including extra time and penalties, Kennington progressed to the semi final of the Harold Slater Shield. Our Lady and St. Edwards proved to be a tough opponent and scored the opening goal from a blistering shot from outside the box leaving Brennan, the Kennington keeper, with no chance of making a save. Kennington kept pluggging away with some good runs by Abbas down the left flank and some strong bursts up the middle by Frankie but Our ladies defence couldn't be broken. Changes were made at half time which proved positive with Idriss linking well with Ben but still there was no break through. Mr Jones made a bold move and brought Brennan out of the goal and up front replacing him with Ben. This turned out to be a stroke of genius as Brennan caused no end of problems for the opposition defence. Good pressure finally led to the break through with a lovely shot from Amaan bulging the back of the net. More pressure almost led to a second but the St. Edward's defence held strong. It was pretty much the same story in both halves of extra time with both sides coming close. 44 minutes of game time couldn't separate the two sides so it was to be decided on penalties. Some great shots from Michael, Amaan, Atif and Brennan and a fantastic save from the stand in keeper Ben ensured Kennington's place in the next round of the cup.
Sat, 25 Apr 2015 16:14:49 GMT 5 trip to MOSI
On Wednesday, Ms Derbyshire and her Year 5 class visited The Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester. They took part in 3d printing workshops and toured the exhibits although they didn't get round everything as there's so much to see. Everyone came back with a souvenir andevenbrought back pencil for Mr Pritchard. Take a look at what they did in the photo gallery.
Fri, 24 Apr 2015 11:39:02 GMT Come Close Against Sherwood
Kennington came really close to making a great come back against a strong Sherwood tag rugby side on Friday night. After a really slow start, letting Sherwood score 3 quick tries in the first 2 minutes, Kennington finally woke up and shored up their defence with some great tagging. They finally made a break through scoring some great tries and levelling up the scores at 4-4 with tries from Amerahj, Hena, Ben and Mia. However Sherwood proved to quick down the flanks and were 6-4 up at half time. Kennington started the 2nd half a lot stronger with Idriss making some good runs and going in for some great tries. Sherwood though held out even after two strong bursts from Ben. At the final whistle Kennington just fell short of pulling off a great come back but showed that they have made some great improvements since their last game.
Fri, 17 Apr 2015 16:51:01 GMT Inspection April 2015
The school will be inspected on 14th & 15th April 2015.
Mon, 13 Apr 2015 12:04:31 GMT Forums
Our first Parent Forums were held on the 16th and 17th March and although the amount of parents who attended was low it gave the leadership team a great deal of food for thought about school from a parent's perspective.
